MIXING & MASTERING
WHAT IS MIXING?
Mixing is a transformative process that breathes life into your music. It involves the art of blending all the individual elements of a song, be it the stem files or individual parts, into a cohesive and captivating audio experience. With the skilled touch of a trained engineer, your song can transcend its demo or rough recording state and emerge as a radio-ready masterpiece. KDE Co's expertise not only enhances the sonic quality of your music but also enables you to compete on a level playing field with professionally mixed and mastered material from record labels. By leveraging their technical prowess and artistic sensibilities, KDE Co can help you create a polished and professional piece of music that captures listeners' attention and leaves a lasting impression.
AUDIO RESTORATION
At KDE Co, we understand the importance of delivering high-resolution audio that captivates the listener. That's why our audio restoration process takes center stage. We meticulously remove or control any elements distracting or disturbing the listener, ensuring a clean and immersive experience. Through an intensive restoration phase, we utilize cutting-edge tools like Izotope RX and Waves' noise reduction suite to clean up the audio with utmost precision. In the realm of music, certain aspects act as immediate 'red flags' for the discerning listener. Vocal recordings, in particular, often come with inherent issues that must be addressed to avoid potential problems during the later stages of mixing and mastering. This editing phase, also known as Audio Restoration, is a vital step in the process of each song. Paying special attention to vocals, we ensure that every element is meticulously edited before proceeding to the mixing stage. This meticulous process guarantees that the final product shines and delivers an exceptional sonic experience.

When it comes to achieving a professional-sounding record, having a vocalist with perfect pitch is crucial for melodic accuracy. Our Platinum mix package offers a meticulous manual pitch correction service, where each note is carefully corrected by hand, rather than relying on auto-tune algorithms. We utilize industry-standard software like Melodyne to achieve precise pitch perfection, ensuring that the artist's intended pitch intentions are flawlessly executed. Unlike auto-tune plugins that can introduce artifacts in the voice, we prioritize delivering a clean and natural sound. However, we understand that some artists appreciate the unique artifacts and vibe that auto-tune can add to a performance. Upon the artist's request, we can selectively reintroduce auto-tune to the hand-pitch-perfected vocals, combining the benefits of pitch perfection with the desired artifacts of the plugin. This method allows us to achieve both the pitch perfection of manual tuning and the added character and vibe associated with auto-correction plugins.

We understand that many of our clients find themselves recording in non-professional spaces without the benefits of acoustic treatment. However, we have the expertise and advanced software necessary to tackle this challenge. By leveraging our cutting-edge tools, we can effectively minimize and eliminate the unwanted room tone and reflections that often plague recordings made in untreated environments. This meticulous process enables us to capture a more pristine and direct audio signal, ultimately elevating the overall quality of the recording. We are committed to providing our clients with exceptional sound that surpasses the limitations of their recording environment, ensuring that their final product is of the highest possible standard.

When working with audio files, it's important to be mindful of their limitations. While you may try to increase the volume indefinitely, there comes a point where the audio reaches its maximum level, leading to a phenomenon known as clipping. Clipping occurs when the audio signal exceeds the available headroom, resulting in distortion and an unpleasant listening experience. At our disposal, we have advanced software that enables us to address this issue effectively. With this software, we can reconstruct the clipped-out portions of the audio, restoring the peaks and valleys in their waveforms that were lost during clipping. Additionally, we have the capability to reduce and remove the distortion caused by clipping, ensuring a clean and pristine audio signal. Through these techniques, we can maintain the integrity of the audio, preserving its quality and providing a satisfying listening experience.

When working with vocal recordings, it's important to address a specific issue known as sibilance. The exaggerated prominence of consonant sounds like 'S', 'Z', 'Sh', 'Ch', and 'J' can often prove distracting to listeners. At our studio, we possess the expertise to effectively control and manage sibilance, ensuring a pleasant and enjoyable listening experience. Through careful processing and techniques, we can reduce the excessive sibilant sounds to a level that is pleasing to the ears of the audience. By mitigating this distraction, we allow the true essence of the vocalist's performance to shine through, capturing the attention and engagement of the listeners.

When it comes to vocal recordings, dealing with plosives is a common challenge. Certain consonant sounds such as 'P', 'B', 'D', and 'G' can result in unwanted bursts of air when recorded into a microphone. These bursts often translate into excessive low-end and low-mid frequencies, even if a pop filter is in place. However, we have developed effective methods to tackle these issues. Through careful techniques and processing, we are able to identify and remove these unwanted bursts, ensuring a clean and balanced audio recording. By mitigating the impact of plosives, we create a smoother and more enjoyable listening experience, allowing the true essence of the vocals to shine without distraction.
-
During vocal recordings, another common challenge is the presence of lip smacks. Lip smacks occur when the saliva in the mouth or on a singer’s lips becomes audible, particularly during delicate vocal passages or when recording busy rap verses. These lip smacks manifest as short, high-frequency noise crackles that can distract listeners. At our studio, we pay meticulous attention to these elements in all vocal passages. Through specialized techniques and processing, we effectively treat and address the issue of lip smacks. By reducing or removing these unwanted sounds, we ensure a smooth and seamless listening experience, allowing the focus to remain on the performance itself and enhancing the overall quality of the recording.

When working with vocalists, one aspect that requires attention is breath control and breathing during recordings. Over-exaggerated breaths can sometimes detract from the overall professionalism of a vocal performance. At our studio, we employ methods to effectively level out the breaths in a manner that enhances the professionalism of the vocalist's performance. Through careful processing techniques, we ensure that breaths are balanced within the mix, seamlessly integrating them without drawing undue attention. By achieving a more polished and controlled vocal performance, we create a professional listening experience that allows the focus to remain on the expressive qualities of the vocals, ensuring a captivating and engaging result.

When aiming for a larger-than-life sound or a powerful pop chorus, one effective technique is to stack vocals with harmonies and doubles. However, achieving a clean and impactful result involves meticulous cleanup, particularly in terms of alignment and pitch correction. The alignment of doubled vocals extends beyond pop music, as it plays a significant role in rap music where artists often double their verses and choruses for added impact. With our refined processes and specialized tools, we are able to achieve precise time and phase alignment for all doubled vocals. Time alignment is achieved using multiple plugins, with VocALign Pro being a key tool in ensuring vocals are perfectly time-aligned, providing a polished result. In addition to time alignment, we address phase issues using Auto Align. This ensures that the doubled vocals are not only in perfect time but also in phase, eliminating any frequency or phase-related concerns. By employing these techniques, we create a cohesive and impactful vocal performance where the doubles seamlessly complement the main vocals, producing a professional and engaging sound.
RESTORATION TYPES
THE PROCESS
Prepare the .wav audio files: Gather all the .wav audio files associated with your song. These files will be the foundation for our work. To ensure the highest quality during the process, we up-sample each file to 96kHz 24Bit audio. This up-sampling step guarantees optimal quality when re-sampling through our custom analog gear, adding a touch of analog warmth and enhancing the overall sound.
Include session files: If you have session files from Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, FL Studio, or any other DAW you use, it's always helpful to have them available. Session files provide additional flexibility and allow us to access any specific stems or elements if needed during the process. They enable us to have a comprehensive view of your project and ensure we can deliver the best possible outcome.
Provide full track-out stems: While not every artist may have these, it’s highly recommended to include full track-out stems of the instrumental and vocal takes. Full track-out stems separate each individual element of your song, providing greater control and flexibility during the mixing and mastering process. Having these stems will result in the best professional results and allow us to tailor the final product to your vision.
Use our dedicated folder: Once we have agreed on a specific tier of service, we will provide you with a dedicated folder link. You can conveniently upload all your song assets by simply dragging and dropping them into this folder. This streamlined process ensures that all your files are securely received and organized in one place, allowing us to work efficiently and effectively.
Include a reference track: Finally, please include a reference track with the song bounced at its current state. This reference track serves as a valuable reference point for us. It helps us understand your desired levels, overall sound, and the specific vision you have in mind for your song. By having this reference track, we can ensure that our work aligns closely with your creative intentions.

We begin by thoroughly discussing the project with the client and gathering their input regarding objectives, creative direction, scheduling, and final deliverables. The client is required to make a 50% deposit payment to initiate the project.
-
Once the initial payment is received, KDE Co commences collecting all necessary stems and individual elements from the artist (or stereo files in the case of mastering) along with any additional assets essential for completing the job.
-
KDE Co initiates the mixing process for all songs once the complete assets have been collected and approved.
-
The client then reviews the mixes and may provide written notes via email for any desired revisions. KDE Co ensures a prompt turnaround of revision notes within 48 hours, working collaboratively to reach an agreed-upon understanding.
-
KDE Co incorporates all final revision notes, bringing the project to its ultimate stage. Upon completion, the final deliverables are provided to the client, and a final payment of 50% is made, covering the full cost of the work. This systematic approach ensures clear communication, efficient progress, and a successful outcome for all parties involved.
